The Three Lions travelled to Ljubljana to take on Slovenia in their EURO 2016 qualifier. Though Jack Wilshere impressed during the whole match, he had to raise his game after the hosts have capitalized on a defensive disorder from the visitors, to take the lead through Milivoje Novakovic in the first half. As team captain Wayne Rooney was missing sitters, Wilshere smashed the ball in twice from long range to secure the lead for England after the break. Since the hosts have equalized in the 84th minute however, Rooney had to add a goal himself to retain the 100% record for Roy Hodgson’s team.

It seemed that Jack Wilshere will become the new hero of the English, until Slovenia equalized. That suggested two things, first, the English national team still has defensive problems, second, Wayne Rooney, who looked impotent for the most part of the game, had to join Wilshere to save the day.

Though he was far from his best, Rooney duly did so eventually to match Gary Lineker’s tally of 48 goals in the shirt of the Three Lions, which is only one less than record holder Bobby Charlton’s total of 49. He could have easily reach 50 against Slovenia, but he somehow managed to miss his biggest chances before he found the net two minutes after Slovenia levelled through Nejc Pecnik.

Before that, Wilshere was the man, who smashed the ball into the top right corner of Samir Handanovic’s goal twice from long range. Many followers of live sports results would agree that Internazionale goalkeeper had no chance to save either shots.

The Three Lions’ former captain, Gary Lineker stated that against Slovenia Jack Wilshere scored one of the finest goals in England’s history. The Arsenal midfielder provided two goals in a comeback victory in Ljubljana, the second being a scorcher from 25 yards.

“Jack Wilshere scored two breathtaking goals” said Lineker. “I’m sure he hit the same square of the net on both occasions.” He added, “Let’s put it this way – if we had a top 10 he’d be in it.” These were the first goals from the 23-year-old player wearing the England shirt, according to sports scores news.

Through Wilshere’s double and an additional goal from Wayne Rooney the England national team retained its 100% record in the qualifying series for the EURO 2016. Wilshere usually plays in front of the defence, however after impressing in the second half with his attacking capabilities, Lineker believes that his perfect position would be a more advanced one had England provided natural holding midfielders.
